PWWTU Call For Volunteers

Our friends and colleagues at Penns Woods West - Trout Unlimited are looking for some volunteers for upcoming events. More info below.

Seneca Valley "Field Day"--Remake Learning Conservation event:

Thursday May 8th-8:30am to 2:30pm (Alternate May 13th to be used if the creek is unsafe to wade/fish):  

The Event:  Seneca Valley  will be hosting a full day that includes macro sampling, streamside ecology, fly fishing, fly tying and spin fishing.

What TU is doing:  We will be tying flies with groups of 12 students (45 minute sessions) and helping them understand the link between those flies and the macros in the stream.  We also will be taking our TU rods for the event since the school has spinning gear and youth waders but no fly fishing gear. During lunch, we will be able to set up a table with information about TU including youth programs and so forth.  

Volunteers Needed: 6 to 12 volunteers who can assist students in tying basic flies (wooly bugger and mop fly) for May 8th and/or May 13th (alternate date due to weather).  The days are divided into 2 shifts and volunteers can sign up for either shift or both:    

• 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM (set-up and the morning). 

• 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM (Lunch and Afternoon).  

     Vises and Fly Materials etc. will be provided for the youth.

A.W. Beattie Career Center Out for Trout Event-

Friday May 9th- 8AM to approximately 1:30 PM, North Park

The Event: A.W. Beattie is a Career Center for students who thrive in a non-traditional educational environment. They hold an annual fishing event at North Park where students spin fish (or fly fish) for stocked trout. This year the event is capped at 36 students.

What TU is doing:  TU will be working with the students to complete a macro-invertebrate sampling as well as demonstrating fly casting and assisting with the fishing (both spin fishing and fly fishing).  Allison Park Sportsman's Association will also be participating.  TU will provide macro collection/identification materials, fly rods, flies and prizes.

Volunteers Needed:  We need approximately 6 to 10 volunteers for the event.  Lunch is provided for everyone.
